How the score is worked out

The calculator turns four raw section scores into one placement score out of 120. Each section is worth up to 30 points. For example, 30 out of 35 in Mathematical Reasoning becomes about 25.7 points.

The result is compared with the estimated entry scores of 24 NSW selective high schools. Single-sex schools are shown only for the matching gender filter. See the school rankings and entry scores for the full list.

Calculator questions

How does the selective school score calculator work?
You enter a raw score for each section: Mathematical Reasoning out of 35, Reading out of 38, Thinking Skills out of 40 and Writing out of 25. Each score is scaled to 30 points and the four results are added to give a total out of 120. The total is then compared with the estimated entry score of each school.
Is the calculator result an official score?
No. The NSW Department of Education does not publish how sections are weighted, and it stopped publishing school cutoffs after 2021. The calculator assumes all four sections count equally, and the school scores are estimates. Use the result as a rough guide only.
Which scores should I enter?
Use scores from full-length timed practice tests in the real computer-based format. Scores from short or untimed practice usually look higher than the real test.
Does the calculator work for the OC test?
No. It is built for the Year 6 Selective High School Placement Test, which is scored in four sections. The Opportunity Class test is a separate Year 4 test.
