Frequently Asked Questions

What score does my child need for James Ruse or North Sydney Boys?

Both are the most competitive selective schools in NSW. North Sydney Boys is estimated to require around 107/120 and James Ruse around 105/120. Acceptance rates are 3–5% — preparation well in advance is essential.

Why is there a rank like #142 in the table but only 24 schools listed?

The 2025 rank covers all NSW high schools, including private, Christian, and comprehensive schools. We have filtered the list to show only NSW government selective schools, so the rank numbers reflect each school's position among all high schools in NSW — not just selective ones.

How is the NSW selective school placement score calculated?

The placement score is out of 120. Each of the four test sections — Reading (out of 30), Mathematics (out of 35), Thinking Skills (out of 40), and Writing (out of 25) — is scaled equally to 30 points and summed. For example, scoring 30 out of 35 in Maths gives 30 ÷ 35 × 30 = 25.71 points from that section alone.

How does this calculator work out the score?

We scale each subject's raw mark equally to 30 points, then add them together for a total out of 120. Reading is marked out of 30, Mathematics out of 35, Thinking Skills out of 40, and Writing out of 25. This matches the equal-weighting model used in the official test from 2025 onwards.

Where do the estimated cutoff scores come from?

The NSW Department of Education stopped publishing official cutoff scores after 2021. Our estimated cutoffs are based on our own research and sources. They are estimates only — actual cutoffs shift each year based on applicant cohort size and performance.

What is HSC Success Rate and why does it matter for Year 7 entry?

HSC Success Rate is the percentage of exam entries that achieved a Band 6 (top band) result in the 2024 HSC. It reflects long-term academic outcomes at each school — higher rates generally indicate a more academically competitive cohort, which broadly correlates with more competitive selective entry requirements.

How accurate is this calculator?

This is an estimate based on practice test performance. Actual placement scores are scaled by the NSW Department of Education relative to the full cohort each year — your child's real score may differ. Use it as a guide to identify strengths and gaps, not as a guarantee of placement.

What is the difference between selective and OC?

Opportunity Class (OC) is for Year 5 entry, tested in Year 4. Selective High School is for Year 7 entry, tested in Year 6. Both are NSW government programs for academically gifted students. The selective high school test is significantly more competitive.

What happens if my child scores below the cutoff?

They may still receive an offer from a lower-ranked selective school, or be placed on a reserve list if scores are close. Other options include partially selective schools, private school scholarship programs, or a strong local comprehensive school. Many successful students thrive outside the fully selective system.

How many students compete for selective school places?

In 2025 approximately 17,500 students applied for NSW selective school entry, with an overall acceptance rate of around 25%. Competition is far higher for elite schools — North Sydney Boys and James Ruse each have thousands of applicants for roughly 120–160 places.

When do NSW selective school results come out?

Placement offers are typically released in late July or August, approximately 3–4 months after the March exam. Students who are not offered a place are notified at the same time.
